Since it's a holiday weekend, actuals won't be reported until Tuesday afternoon, but since the estimates show such clear-cut gaps, it's still worth discussing. Let's all take a moment to mock a movie that deserves it: after spending just one week in the Top 10, Vampire Academy drops out, and can't even average $800 a theater (compare to The LEGO Movie's almost $13,000 per theater, also in its second week). As for movies that actually matter, despite opening in the fewest theaters of any of the newcomers, About Last Night beat them all, giving Kevin Hart 2 of the Top 6 entries (Ride Along). Considering 3 of the 4 newcomers were remakes (pardon me RoboCop, reboot), it was a surprisingly robust weekend as it fell just short of being the highest grossing weekend in 2014 so far. Audiences were obviously ready for some of these stories to be told again. The only original take of the remakes was actually the one that bombed. Winter's Tale added to Colin Farrell's recent disappointing streak, and he probably needs to start picking better movies if he wants to stay an A-lister. Hint: I hope he does.
