Anchorman 2 | Her
A light week, as most of the major releases came out in limited fashion last week (and thus, were covered in last week's Friday First Impressions). It does, however, include our first chance to see how I did with a Saturday Psychic (Her)!
Anchorman 2
I'll admit it: I don't generally like Will Ferrell. I don't find Talladega Nights funny, and Step Brothers is so obnoxious, it's unwatchable. That said, Anchorman just works. Other than his role in Wedding Crashers, there isn't one I like more. I don't have any specific reason Ron Burgundy works better than those other characters (Will Ferrell doesn't have a lot of modes), but it is somehow. Sequels, especially in comedy, can be fairly blatant cash-grabs (I'm looking at you, Hangover series); a straight trade of the name recognition and good will the original generated for box office receipts. I have higher hopes for Anchorman 2 though, because the time elapsed between the original and this one suggests they had to see a script they liked to reprise their roles, and not just enough zeroes on the check. That may be more than a small amount of naïve optimism, but it's enough for me to go see it.
Her
We're going two for two this week, since there's no way I'll miss seeing how I did calling this one. Of the two, I have higher hopes placed on Her, given the profundity I think it could possess. There isn't much more to say given that I wrote an entire article on this movie, so if you want more, click the link above!
