In a battle of sequels, The Hobbit 2 managed to hold off Anchorman 2 (review coming soon), however both are off the pace of their originals - interesting given that 2013 will take the box office record for most money earned, surpassing 2012's $10.84 billion record. The Hobbit 2 has little chance of passing $300 million domestic like the first in the series did, but any loss of domestic box office by Anchorman 2 will be more than mitigated by its international take, where it is has already surpassed the original in just its first weekend. On a somber note, tumbling 86.5%, Out of the Furnace dropped all the way from 6th to 21st in just its 3rd week. I haven't seen it (and at this rate, probably won't get the chance for a while), so I can't say that I understand how those ingredients with that trailer flopped. It's not all bad news for Christian Bale though, as American Hustle in its first week of wide release, looks to be well on pace to close north of $100 million, especially given the boost its award nominations will give it.
