Natalie defends a movie she loves even though she knows it's terrible.
After the havoc that mother nature has been creating the past couple months, especially the last few weeks here in Colorado, I think this movie choice is very appropriate. And anyone who has spent more that 5 minutes in the -15 degree weather we have been enjoying has no doubt been replaying a few of the scenes from The Day After Tomorrow in their head.
Why I Love It:
5. It has a pretty decent cast. Not Academy Award winners (ed. note: Gyllenhaal was nominated for Brokeback Mountain), but good enough actors and actresses to make the story believable and enjoyable.
4. A giant freighter floats into the middle of New York City, then gets frozen in place and overrun with escaped wolves. But that's not it, this "ghost ship" is the only source of medicine for a desperately ill character. How cool is that? I will tell you. Totally awesome!!
3. It has absolutely stunning visuals and all of the scenes with the natural disasters are very well done and pretty stunning.
2. I think that Jake Gyllenhaal's group being holed up in the New York Library is like the coolest thing ever and if I was stuck in any building in NYC I think I would want it to be the library.
1. The science may not be completely accurate, but it's awesome. Yes all of the catastrophic natural disasters that occur are a little over the top, but none of them are completely out of the picture for what can actually happen. As we have seen across the country from tornados, to floods, to fires, to freezes there are legitimate events from this movie (to a lesser degree) that can happen.

Why It's Terrible:
5. A lot of the dialogue is pointless or does not convey the urgency of the situation that it needs to.
4. A lot of what happens is a bit too far past far-fetched to be believable and makes the movie lose face and credibility.
3. The movie focuses too much on the dramatic sequences and not enough on really building character connections or dynamics.
2. If more time had been spent on the plot and less on the shock value for the audience, this movie might have acutally been able to be great.
1. The end of the movie is so rushed and definitely in a hurry to just tie up all lose ends as quick as possible. Dennis Quaid's character reaches New York, finds his son, and the storm is magically over, the rescue teams come, and there is no talk about how this is definitely not the end of any of these events or what is actually going to be done to save people. The father and son are reunited and that's all that matters. End of movie.

Although this movie is more than one change away from being great, I think that out of all the movies I have defended this is the best, or at least has the most potential. I also think this is a fantastic movie and I would recommend it to anyone. I also believe that out of the movies I have defended this is the one that you will find among people's Top 50 the most often.
