The Hunger Games: Catching Fire | Delivery Man | Contracted
3 very different movies going up against each other this week, with an action, comedy, and horror, also giving us a big-budget, standard-budget, and low-budget choice.
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire
The much anticipated sequel to 2012's near-$700 million juggernaut. Look, you already know if you'll be seeing this movie or not; you don't need me trying to convince you one way or the other. Personally, I will be because watching a Jennifer Lawrence movie right now feels like getting in on something on the ground floor. She's great, and she's going to be great for a long time. Think about what you were doing at 21/22 years old and then stack it up against Silver Linings Playbook.
Delivery Man
Vince Vaughn plays Vince Vaughn (his character name is superfluous at this point; he plays the same manchild in every movie he does) in the story of a man who fathered a preposterous amount of children through a sperm bank and will now be a part of their lives. Heartwarming comedy will supposedly ensue. This stinks of a studio knowing it has a clunker, dropping it in a week when there aren't any other strong comedies around, and hoping it gets a little boost from being the only comedic alternative to super-serious young adult novels-turned-movies. Regardless, Vince Vaughn seems determined to change himself into Adam Sandler, and after watching Weddings Crashers, I'd rather not see his metamorphosis through to the end.
Contracted
Speaking of metamorphoses (nailed the segue!), this movie features a one-night-stand leaves a woman believing she's contracted an STI, only to find out it's much worse. I'll admit to being a sucker for body-horror movies, so if stuff like Slither or even The Fly didn't do it for you, you can probably skip this one.
