Lone Survivor | The Legend of Hercules | The Truth About Emanuel
Really only one titan gets released this week, along with Her hitting wide release. Go see it!
Lone Survivor
I predicted that Taylor Kitsch was done seeing headliner status, and lo and behold, Mark Wahlberg is the only name featured on the poster for this one. Strange to see Ben Foster, Emile Hirsch and Eric Bana left of as well, but I guess my only personal biases don't move the starmeter that much. I keep hearing that this movie is amazing, that it's the best war film since Saving Private Ryan, so why do the trailers keep making it look like Act of Valor with a better cast? If this movie winds up being good, it's the argument at the opposite end of the spectrum of a good trailer that still proves my point: there needs to be an Academy Award for trailers. There's obvious skill to it, and it's quite easy to spot a lack thereof.
The Legend of Hercules
I wrote a Saturday Psychic about this one, so there's not much need for me to expound on it here. Spoiler alert: it won't be good.
The Truth About Emanuel
Poor Jessica Biel. All she can do these days is high-concept movies that don't have the quality of cast or crew to realize their potential. The Tall Man could have been an amazing shift in the way to tell the story of a thriller. Instead, it unraveled into just another low budget girl-on-the-run film with a few too many twists. This one looks like a Single White Female imitator that will just add a generational gap between the characters, though not the actresses, putting the movie behind the eight ball before the lights ever dim. Jennifer Lawrence is amazing at playing characters much older than her real age, but it works because her character's age isn't a central part of the story. Someone should've told the producers on this one that a 10 year gap between the actresses isn't enough.
