That Awkward Moment
| Hollywood is really big on the idea of Zac Efron as a leading man, but I'm just not buying it. When the trailer can only provide one solid line ("... and then I remembered, I'm a dude") that sounds lifted from Joey off a "Friends" episode, my expectations aren't too high. It's sort of sad to watch Michael B. Jordan take all the credibility he established with Fruitvale Station and flush it on a 20-somethings American Pie. This feels more like a trailer for a comedy "Coming This Fall to ABC" than a movie that thinks it has the skill to juggle multiple storylines. |
Labor Day
| It's current 35% on Rotten Tomatoes isn't particularly encouraging and some of its overly sappy lines give me pause, but I had pretty high hopes for this one after seeing the trailer. I think both Brolin and Winslet will raise the level of whatever the movie winds up being, but this sort of movie does seem to telegraph its inevitably tragic ending (shotgun blast through the car seat doesn't leave a lot to the imagination). I like how the song at the end of the trailer has suddenly become the ubiquitous song to use in romance movies, with it also popping up in the trailer for Winter's Tale. |
