Do we need to have an intervention? I mean, seriously, do we need a countrywide sit-down to talk about this? Ride Along, The Nut Job and Devil's Due open at #1, #3 and #7 respectively when none of them can crack 20% on Rotten Tomatoes? Combined they don't equal the score of Her, still languishing at #11. I can't understand how everyone who's seen it is telling America that Her is a masterpiece and it can't beat out these terrible movies. Ride Along is at least somewhat defensible. If you liked what you saw in the preview (God knows why), you were guaranteed to get an entire movie of that. Ice Cube and Kevin Hart both have very strong, separate brands and the marketing stressed appeal to women as well with the engagement plotline. But those factors allowing a 16% movie to take the record for biggest January opening? While Jack Ryan was no classic, even if audiences were in the mood for a new movie, it should have outperformed its results. I would call this the most surprising week since I've been doing the recaps and I hope awards buzz for some of the worthier movies can restore order next weekend.
