All The Worthwhile Movie News From The Week
The Purge: Anarchy
Are you a fan of fast turnaround attempts to cash in on unexpected success? Hot of the surprising performance of The Purge, Universal worked to crank out a sequel that, given the short timeframe, is likely to be devoid of anything resembling creative integrity. Remember the Saw series? Exactly. This teaser premiered two days after shooting wrapped, so I'm sure it's going to be a masterpiece.

Brick Mansions
One of the last films Paul Walker shot is actually a remake of a French film called District 13. Like Ong-Bak, when you shoot your action-heavy movie primarily without using wires or CGI, the viewer's brain can subconsciously register that it's seeing something more "real". While the storyline of the original was dubious at best (I haven't seen any of the sequels) the action sequences were enough to make it watchable. It'll be interesting to see what a Hollywood budget can do for it, especially since it brings back one of the French stars to do the parkour.

Under the Skin
Scarlett Johannson's next movie based on the novel about an alien seductress praying on hitchhikers has a trailer that makes it look much more intriguing than that Jennifer's Body synopsis would make you think. Definitely playing up the obscurity, the trailer nevertheless features some fairly hyperbolic quotes about how good it and Johansson's performance are. If you like the sort of indie fare the trailer reminds me of (Teeth, Slither) it looks pretty promising.

Untitled Xmas Comedy
Hollywood thought 50/50 was such a success (modest financially; more-so creatively), it makes sense to re-team almost everyone involved. Seth Rogen and Joseph Gordon-Levitt are both signed to again be directed by Jonathon Levine in a comedy about 3 friends celebrating their annual Christmas tradition. The third role has yet to be cast, but let's just assume it's Jay Baruchel with a slight hedge towards Jonah Hill.

China's Foreign Film Limit
China is said to be mulling raising the limit on foreign films it allows into its market from 34 to 44 per year. While Hollywood argues that China's WTO membership means there should be no limit at all, this is at least a step in the right direction, and one that can only help Hollywood get a piece of that lucrative market.
