All the Worthwhile Movie News From the Super Bowl
Phillip Seymour Hoffman
Starting on a somber note, Phillip Seymour Hoffman was found dead in his apartment at the age of 46. His death is being reported as an apparent heroin overdose, something he had struggled with since youth. The sort of actor who was so talented, you knew he was only going to be in compelling movies, he achieved massive success in Hollywood despite not having the traditional good looks needed for that kind of longevity. He will be missed.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2There's a lot more to evaluate in this new extended preview for the Amazing Spider-Man 2. We get complete admission that not only will the Osborns be in this one, so will the Green Goblin. We see that the CGI for Electro looks pretty good, and the CGI for Spidey looks... iffy (especially bad when he uses a manhole cover as a shield). Overall, it looks like it will maintain its more playful feel than some of the darker superheroes, but I'm not sure that's enough to save it.
Transformers: Age of ExtinctionWe get an all new cast of humans for this one, but the Transformers will get to ride dragons, because apparently the brainstorming sessions for Transformers movies now follow the model set by Pacific Rim. The screenwriters watch their 8-year-old sons play with action figures and flesh out the results. Michael Bay is still running this show, so I'm sure it will be the sort of mindless entertainment they've always been.
Captain America: The Winter SoldierEven if you didn't check the IMDb page, they're not exactly hiding the fact that the villain is Cap's friend Bucky from the first movie anymore. I've always thought there's more potential in the Captain America story than the flag-waving patriotism it usually devolves into. The "it's a price I'm willing to pay" doesn't really instill hope that this one will overcome them, but he's even got his on black sidekick like Iron Man now! Nice to see Marvel branching out.
Need For SpeedThe Super Bowl just featured a 30-second spot, but I've linked the trailer to the left, because it does a much better job in 2.5 minutes showing that, yes, this will in fact just be a Fast and Furious rip-off. Michael Keaton seems to be embracing his inner Nic Cage and just starring in anything with a paycheck these days, and lines like "racing is an art, but racing with passion is high art" seem lifted straight out of a Dom Toretto deleted scene.
